sanjaya uvaca

evam uktva hrishikesam

gudakesah parantapah

na yotsya iti govindam

uktva tushnim babhuva ha

SYNONYMS

sanjayah uvacaSanjaya said; evam — thus; uktva — speaking; hrishikesam — unto Krishna, the master of the senses; gudakesahArjuna, the master of curbing ignorance; parantapah — the chastiser of the enemies; na yotsyeI shall not fight; iti — thus; govindam — unto Krishna, the giver of pleasure to the senses; uktva — saying; tushnim — silent; babhuva — became; ha — certainly.

TRANSLATION

Sanjaya said: Having spoken thus, Arjuna, chastiser of enemies, told Krishna, “Govinda, I shall not fight,” and fell silent.

evam uktva, having spoken thus, hrishikesam, so am suffix alludes to the person it is spoken, and ah suffix indicates to the person who is speaking. So suffix used for hrishikes it is (am) and for gudakes it is (ah). Gudakesha (Arjuna) is speaking to Hrishikesh (to the Lord). Gudakesh connotes to the Lord of sleep, so actually both of them are Isha, but one isha is higher than other.

Although Arjuna has conquered on sleep, he is still jiva and he is getting conquered by other forms of ignorance, other forms of illusion parantapah. So it is interesting that here, Arjuna is using one word to glorify Krishna, but Sanjay is using two words to glorify Arjuna, gudakesah and parantapah.

So material nature is so overwhelming that even a person who is gudakesah & parantapah can be dragged down and can be dropped to kneesto the state of helplessness. na yotsya iti govindam, so that gudakesah who is frozen by indecision, now he is saying na yotsya iti govindam, I will not fight, I will not fight. And then uktva tushnim, he spoke thus, and babhuva ha and after speaking thus, he become silent. So uktva mentioned twice; first uktva refers to what is spoken earlier in previous verses 4-8.

na yotsya iti govindam, so he has spoken to Govinda na yotsya, O Govinda I will not fight,

So Srila Prabhupada has mentioned Dhritarastra is delighted, but that was for short time. Krishna is Hrishikesha and Govinda, he will bring the senses of in control, if that has gone out of control now. He will give Arjuna satisfaction by engaging him in devotional services.
