If, however, you do not perform your religious duty of fighting, then you will certainly incur sins for neglecting your duties and thus lose your reputation as a fighter.

“Atha cet tvam, if, however, you do not follow this dharma, imam dharmyam, and you neglect to engage in battle, sangramam na karishyasi, then what will happen? Tatah sva-dharmam kirtim ca hitva, you will lose your dharma and your reputation. Not fulfilling your dharma is inauspicious, resulting in papa. Just as neglecting patients is a crime for a doctor due to negligence, similarly, if a Kshatriya fails to protect the citizens, it is considered a crime due to negligence. Therefore, Krishna is telling here to Arjuna, if you don’t fulfill your dharma, papam avapsyasi, you will lose your dharma, and there will be no opportunity for punya, but you will accrue papa.
