Now Arjuna’s question is ok that is fine but my original question was on bondage, I wanted to give up activities because activities lead to bondage and inactivity is the way by which we can free up from bondage so next verse tells, no that won’t happens, you can do activities but still can remain free from bondage.

Bg 3.9

yajñārthāt karmao ’nyatra
loko ’ya karma-bandhana
tad-artha karma kaunteya
mukta-saga samācara

Word for word:

yajñaarthāt — done only for the sake of Yajña, or Viṣṇu; karmaa — than work; anyatra — otherwise; loka — world; ayam — this; karmabandhana — bondage by work; tat — of Him; artham — for the sake; karma — work; kaunteya — O son of Kuntī; muktasaga — liberated from association; samācara — do perfectly.

Translation:

Work done as a sacrice for Viṣṇu has to be performed; otherwise work causes bondage in this material world. Therefore, O son of Kuntī, perform your prescribed duties for His satisfaction, and in that way you will always remain free from bondage.

“yajñārthāt karmaṇo: So one should do work for the purpose of Yajna.

’nyatra: For any other purpose, if one does work,

loko ’yaṁ karma-bandhanaḥ: one becomes bound by karma.

Therefore, tad-arthaṁ karma kaunteya: What is tad-artham? Yajñārthāt, for the sake of Yajna, karma, Kaunteya, you should do then.

mukta-saṅgaḥ samācara: Then you will always stay free from bondage; you will not get bound.

This is the first verse in the Bhagavad Gita which refers to Yajna. This will repeat in further verses. Yajna has a form and a principle, just like in Yoga, most people associate Yoga with sitting in a particular asana, but this is the form, one particular form, but the principle is Yoga means the connection of the soul with the super soul.

Similarly, Yajna has a form and principle. So generally, people just focus on forms, and the form of Yajna is fire sacrifice, and in that Ahuti is made, but what is the principle? The principle is sacrifice.

From a material point of view, it may seem that offerings like ghee, rice, etc., made in a fire sacrifice are useless, but it is not so. Fire Sacrifice is considered as the mouth of Lord Vishnu, and the offerings made go to the Lord, as per Rig Veda:

Deva Nam Parmo Vishnu, Avamo Agni Tadantara Serva Devatas

Rig Veda says that among Devatas, the Supreme Devata is Vishnu, and the lowest (in terms of accessibility and not in terms of power) is Agni, and in between are other devatas.

The highest and most transcendental God is Lord Vishnu, which is the most difficult to reach, and the easiest to reach demigod is Agni Dev. Through Agni Dev, sacrifice can be offered to all different demigods and to Lord Vishnu. This can be explained by our financial system or Credit Card system. Someone puts money and gets a credit card/debit card. Someone who doesn’t know the system, if he sees this, he will say, ‘Oh, you have given Rs 50,000/- and got just this small plastic card,’ but then somebody can explain it: ‘No, the money is not lost; it is here through this card, I can spend Rs 50,000/- using this card.’ Like that, we can make a sacrifice in fire, but it is not lost; it is just lost from the material vision. It reaches God, and we will benefit like pious credit, material and spiritual benefit. I could have eaten, but I have given to Lord Vishnu, that is sacrifice. So in this verse, Krishna is talking about the principle of Yajna and not the form of Yajna. The principle is sacrifice, so what I could have enjoyed, I have given it up for the sake of the Lord. That is sacrifice, so Yajna represents sacrifice. So Krishna is telling here when you do your work as a sacrifice, then you will not be bound; you will be liberated. Therefore, do your work as a sacrifice; then there is no bondage at all, and there is the principle of Varnashrama as quoted by SP in purport: Varṇāśramācāravatā puruṣeṇa paraḥ pumān/ viṣṇur ārādhyate (Viṣṇu Purāṇa 3.8.8).

The purpose of Varnashrama is to satisfy Lord Vishnu, and when one does it in this way, one is not bound by Karma.

So in this way, Krishna has concluded the section that you should act and do not give up activity and act in such a way that you are not bound. Lord said in the Bhagavad Gita that whatever work we do, we should work as a sacrifice to Lord Vishnu. Varnashrama is meant to achieve this.”
