Transcript of Bhakti-Shastri class on this verse by Chaitanya Charan

And Krishna will describe in next verse what will the result of this kind of offerings, when we act in this way we will make rapid spiritual advancement:

Bg 9.28

śubhāśubha-phalair evaṁ
mokṣyase karma-bandhanaiḥ
sannyāsa-yoga-yuktātmā
vimukto mām upaiṣyasi

Word for word:

śubha — from auspicious; aśubha — and inauspicious; phalaiḥ — results; evam — thus; mokṣyase — you will become free; karma — of work; bandhanaiḥ — from the bondage; sannyāsa — of renunciation; yoga — the yoga;yuktaātmā — having the mind firmly set on; vimuktaḥ — liberated; mām — to Me; upaiṣyasi — you will attain.

Translation:

In this way you will be freed from bondage to work and its auspicious and inauspicious results. With your mind fixed on Me in this principle of renunciation, you will be liberated and come to Me.

So when we offer our activities and in that way our life to Krishna

śubhāśubha-phalair evaṁ, śubha āśubha phala so we become free from the auspicious and inauspicious result of our work

mokṣyase, we become free, karma-bandhanaiḥ, karma bandhan, from the bondage of Karma we become free, and when we become free from the bondage of Karma then sannyāsa-yoga-yuktātmā, such a person is engaged in Sannyas Yoga, so it is interesting Sannyas means disconnection / renunciation and Yoga means connection.

In 6th chapter 1 and 2nd verse Krishna has told sa sannyāsī ca yogī ca, na niragnir na cākriyaḥ, the Sannyas and Yoga is the same thing, Sannyas is disconnection from matter and Yoga is connection to spirit, so Krishna is integrating the two words here sannyāsa-yoga-yuktātmā such a person who is offering all the works to Me such a person will become free from auspicious and inauspicious of this world. We can do two kinds of activities like Punya and Papa, Punya is better than papa definitely but still both are material. And both will keep us within Karmic bondage. So if we want liberation from Karmic bondage then we should become free from both. And Krishna is saying by doing your work for Me by offering you work to Me, you will become free from both śubhāśubha-phalair evaṁ, mokṣyase. So what is the end result one not only become free from Karmic bondage, Mukti is liberation but vimukto is special liberation ultimate liberation the highest liberation so what is the highest liberation leads to mām upaiṣyasi, you will attain Me mām upaiṣyasi, So Krishna is saying this special liberation is you will return back to Me this is the gradual progression that will happen, Srila Prabhupada quotes the famous verse from Bhakti Rasamrita of Yukta Vairagya.

Srila Prabhupada emphasizes on 5 kinds of liberation and one goes to the Lord.

And interestingly Srila Prabhupada quotes here the verse tāṅra vākya, kriyā, mudrā vijñeha nā bujhaya (Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Madhya 23.39). The connection with the existing verse is śubhāśubha-phalair evaṁ, mokṣyase karma-bandhanaiḥ

That the pure devotees are not bound by goodness and badness of this world. A pure devotee is bound by love for Krishna and because of which whatever he does is good for everyone. The emphasis of a devotee is not doing good but is on serving God, and for that sometimes a devotee can do something which is not Vedic standard e.g. Madvendra Puri said I cannot do my sandhyavandanam, I cannot do my tarpan, I cannot do my various ritual, Bhadram Astu I offer my respects to you but simply I remember Krishna and that is enough for me. So like that

śubhāśubha-phalair evaṁ

mokṣyase

so one become freed from all material complication whether they be positive or negative and vimukto mām upaiṣyasi, so this is the ultimate goal ultimate perfection of pure devotional service that by pure devotional service we become vimukto mām upaiṣyasi, we return back to Krishna.
