We all are on a multi-lifetime journey of spiritual evolution. We are at our core spiritual beings. As our consciousness expands and evolves, we find pleasure in higher realities.

In constricted consciousness, souls who are essentially like us but who are presently occupying nonhuman species find pleasure primarily in the bodily drives of food, sleep and sex – and in the show of strength that helps them get these things. We humans too pursue these drives using the latest of technologies.

However, our human body offers us souls the opportunity to voluntarily and dramatically expand our consciousness. The essence of this expansion centers on redirecting our attraction from the temporary to the eternal, from the material to the spiritual.

While different world-traditions have come up with different processes for spiritual evolution, all of which can help to different degrees, the essential need for such evolution is the redefinition of our conception of pleasure.

The more we become evolved, the more we can find pleasure in higher spiritual realities that can fill our hearts internally with joy, thereby freeing us from dependence on externals for pleasure.

Such expansion and elevation of consciousness is best achieved when we can focus our consciousness on the most expansive and elevated reality. That reality is Krishna, the all-attractive supreme whose parts we are eternally. He mercifully makes himself accessible in multifarious manifestations. Moreover, whatever we find attractive in the world, it all derives its attractiveness from him. Most importantly, it attracts his mercy, thereby enabling us to evolve by his omnipotent mercy, which far exceeds even our most diligent efforts.

Bhakti-yoga offers us time-tested methods for focusing our consciousness on Krishna.

Attesting to the universality, accessibility and potency of bhakti-yoga, the Bhagavad-gita (08.14) declares that those who can focus their minds on Krishna can attain him easily.
