What we feel we need varies according to our situations and our dispositions. We all have the basic needs of food, clothing and shelter – and money to get these needs. But what we feel we need often exceeds far beyond what we need. We need food, but we may feel that we need a particular delicacy.

When a particular desire grips our consciousness, it becomes so strong that we feel as if we won’t be able to live without it – we feel that we need it and need it now. The origin of this intense longing is in our spiritual core, in who we are and more specifically whose we are.

Gita wisdom explains that we are at our core souls, parts of Krishna, the all-attractive Supreme. In loving him, all our longings for love, peace and joy are eternally and completely fulfilled. The Bhagavad-gita (10.41) states that everything attractive manifests a spark of Krishna’s splendor. This means that whatever we are attracted, whatever we feel we need, we feel attracted to it because it reflects a spark of Krishna’s splendor. Those objects offer a drop of pleasure, whereas Krishna offers the ocean of pleasure. If we consider how attractive we find that single drop, we can get some understanding of how much more attractive the whole ocean will be.

Of course, because we are presently impure, our consciousness is directed away from Krishna towards worldly things and such misdirection of our consciousness makes us feel that we need those things more than Krishna. But these things never provide lasting satisfaction.

When we use our intelligence to practice bhakti-yoga, thereby redirecting our heart to Krishna, we will increasingly realize that he is our ultimate need and we will find supreme satisfaction in his remembrance and service.
