10-32: From practice to perfection in yoga

  • 10-32 defines how one will achieve perfection when one is practicing yoga.
  • 24-32: Realization of Bhagavan

How this happens is described by Sri Krishna further, this will happen Sri Krishna says by regular practice,

Bg 6.28

yuñjann evaṁ sadātmānaṁ
yogī vigata-kalmaṣaḥ
sukhena brahma-saṁsparśam
atyantaṁ sukham aśnute

Word for word:

yuñjan — engaging in yoga practice; evam — thus; sadā — always; ātmānam — the self; yogī — one who is in touch with the Supreme Self; vigata — freed from; kalmaṣaḥ — all material contamination; sukhena — in transcendental happiness; brahmasaṁsparśam — being in constant touch with the Supreme; atyantam — the highest; sukham — happiness; aśnute — attains.

Translation:

Thus the self-controlled yogī, constantly engaged in yoga practice, becomes free from all material contamination and achieves the highest stage of perfect happiness in transcendental loving service to the Lord.

yuñjann evaṁ, when one engages oneself sadātmānaṁ, when one engages oneself constantly in this way yogī vigata-kalmaṣaḥ, in previous verse Sri Krishna uses the word Akalmasam and here He uses yogī vigata-kalmaṣaḥ so when one engages oneself in this way one become Akalmasha, yogī vigata-kalmaṣaḥ and then sukhena brahma-saṁsparśam then one has contact with Brahma, sukham, sukha that comes from saṁsparśam contact this saṁsparśam is often used for physical contact but it means contact of any form saṁsparśamso, brahma-saṁsparśam, what does contact with Brahma means? Actually the soul is able to perceive spiritual reality and relish spiritual reality, this brahma-saṁsparśa is not that we go to temple hall and touch the deities that is not brahma-saṁsparśa, it is not just a physical contact yes if we get opportunity to touch the feet of deties and take the blessings we are very fortunate, opportunity to dress the deties is also very fortunate but that is not primarily that is talked about, sukhena brahma-saṁsparśam means that we contact with Sri Krishna through the purification of our consciousness and redirection of our consciousness to spiritual level of reality sukhena brahma-saṁsparśam and what happens by that atyantaṁ sukham one gets the ultimate happiness supreme happiness atyantaṁ sukham aśnute, one gets the highest happiness, in 6.22 – 23 Sri Krishna has used this in earlier, He said that when Yogi turns inward, atyanata Shukam, atyanat is superlative the highest happiness, so these three verses 28, 29 and 30 they talk about progressive levels of realization, they talk about Brahman realization, Parmatama realization and Bhagvan realization. So this verse is referred to Brahman realization, one comes to brahman realization.

When the yogis are moving forward, when yogi turns inward yogi first perceive all-pervading spiritual reality the spiritual substance that underlines the material appearance, then when yogi moves forward the yogi sees something higher so the next verse will talk about Parmatama realization.

Here Srila Prabhupada mentions in purport that: This transcendental contact with the Supreme is called brahma-saṁsparśa.

saṁsparśa has come in BG in 5.22, Yahi Smaparsa Ca Bhoga, the bhoga which has come by contact of senses and sense object but here Sri Krishna is talking about entirely different types of environment brahma-saṁsparśa
