Transcript of Bhakti-Shastri class on this verse by Chaitanya Charan

First when we see a person first we see his contour, how tall –short the person is, so first Arjuna describes that and then His effulgence…

Bg 11.12

divi sūrya-sahasrasya
bhaved yugapad utthitā
yadi bhāḥ sadṛśī sā syād
bhāsas tasya mahātmanaḥ

Word for word:

divi — in the sky; sūrya — of suns; sahasrasya — of many thousands; bhavet — there were; yugapat — simultaneously; utthitā — present; yadi — if; bhāḥ — light; sadṛśī — like that;  — that; syāt — might be;bhāsaḥ — effulgence; tasya — of Him; mahāātmanaḥ — the great Lord.

Translation:

If hundreds of thousands of suns were to rise at once into the sky, their radiance might resemble the effulgence of the Supreme Person in that universal form.

divi sūrya-sahasrasya, if thousands of suns raise at a time

bhaved yugapad utthitā

At the combination time of two Yuga the sun’s effulgence become far greater, at the time of destructions and one of the factor that accelerate or triggers is increase temperature of the Sun.

bhaved yugapad utthitā,

yadi bhāḥ sadṛśī sā syād

if there were thousands of sun at time with effulgence like that at the time of destruction

bhāsas tasya mahātmanaḥ, Such is effulgence of Supreme Lord

So SP used in purport it is indescribable. Words are often inadequate to describe spiritual vision. So such time words are not describers but they are indicators. When we concoct two ideas like bluish black perception of cloud and a young boys that is just indicator or pointer of Supreme Lord, He is not  like that.

We try to glorify Lord or try to describe the lord that is also a devotional service but it is nowhere compare to His actual opulence and these glories are like minimizing from His real opulence, this is said by Vaishanava Acharyas but that doesn’t mean that we will not glorify Him, it is just our limitation but He is so kind He accepts this as service. So these are just indications.
